Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., also known as Popeyes, was founded in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The owner Alvin Copeland claimed that he named the stores after the fictional detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in the 1971 film "The French Connection", and not the comic strip character Popeye the Sailor. The first Singapore outlet opened in 2001 at Changi Airport.
